This is the best banana bread recipe I have ever tasted. I added some maraschino cherries to the recipe and it was pure heaven!
Comment by kate on 4 February 2009:
mm, i just made it, and it is amazing.
Comment by blue bird on 26 March 2009:
I just made it.. While the bread did turn out moist, for me it was bland, I don’t believe this recipe called for enough bananas or eggs… or butter for that matter. Nice try, blue bird banana bread connoisseur
Comment by beth on 9 July 2009:
the bread was moist. Not to sweet and not overwhelming with banana flavor. I think it was just right if you want a sweet treat without feeling like you just put your tastebuds into a glucose coma.

Guess I’m just to old to know (or remember). Could you please tell me what “plain” flour is? I assumed it was white, but if that’s the case, where does the breas get it’s dark brown color from? Thanks …
Comment by Laura on 17 July 2009:
Plain flour is just regular white flour without a raising agent in it. The banana bread gets it’s dark brown color from the walnuts (optional in this recipe) and there’s probably a teaspoon of cinnamon in there too!

Cant believe this bb website its brill, its so getting me in the mood of baking lots of different bb’s. I tried this one lastn and made a few little adjustments to make it a bit healthier. Used wholemeal flour and added a large cup of dried oatmeal and 2 tablespoons of mixed spice. Turned out really nice, really moist and work colleagues were raving about it, looking forward to trying another one soon! tks for the great receipe..

Baked the bread but added an extra 1/4 cup of overripe banana and it came out sooo moist…better than the Betty Crocker Version!!!
Comment by Alba on 14 September 2009:
I made this yesterday, it was absolutely amazing. Best banana bread I´ve ever had.
Comment by Mary on 10 October 2009:
YUM! I made quite a few substitutions just to avoid a trip to the grocery store, turned out great:
-used 3 egg whites instead of 1 egg
-used all vegetable oil instead of butter
-replaced 1/2 cup of the sugar with honey
-replaced the walnuts with raisins
-added an extra 1/4 cup banana
THANKS!

I love this recipe, but I tweaked it just a bit, based on what I had and wanted to use up
I doubled the bananas (so 2 cups instead of one) and poured on the chocolate chips. They baking time was about 10-20 minutes longer as a result, but I wound up with amazing banana bread that hit the spot perfectly.
Comment by Tiff on 7 January 2010:
This banana bread is wonderful! I did add 1/4 c. extra bananas. I recommend cooking spray on your pan. I greased it with margarine, and the loaf stuck to the pan. But the cooking spray solved that problem. My husband is pretty picky and he absolutely loved this bread. Thank you so much for this recipe!!

This recipe is named true to it’s nature.
Comment by Bobbry on 9 January 2010:
We added 4 oreos in the mix and an extra 1/2 cup of bananas. In the oven right now we’ll see how it turns out…
Comment by Bobbry on 9 January 2010:
Alright well good thing it’s flavorless even with the added 1/4 banana and 4 fucking oreos.
Comment by Sue on 10 January 2010:
Well Bobbery if you take some of that sweetness coming out of your mouth and add just a little cinnamon and a pinch of cloves you will have a very tasty banana bread
Comment by jennifer christina on 16 January 2010:
just whipped this together! added some vanilla extract and cinnamon to mine…and layed thinly sliced banana and brownsugar over the top to bake…the next 54 minutes will be anticipation hell!!!
Comment by katydid on 22 January 2010:
Bobby, shame on you! Foul language and a nasty disposition! Recipes are going to run the gamet of being great and lousy, we all have different tastes. Really? Oreos> That sounds terrible. hope you didn;t choke on them or your four letter words you big oaf.
Comment by AnnaRose on 15 March 2010:
Doin the whole brownsugar and thin sliced bananas at the top…I’ll tell you how it goes.
Comment by lisden on 10 April 2010:
Just made this bread. Surprised it didn’t call for any vanilla. I sprinkled cinnoman and sugar on top. Hope it comes out good, it’s going to be a gift!
Comment by Monica on 27 April 2010:
You must make this!! Its super moist and flavorful!! I added the following to spice it up and tastes wonderful.
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 cups mashed bananas
The baking time lengthened by 15 min by adding the extra bananas.
Comment by Kell on 3 May 2010:
I thought it tasted to much like baking soda. I added vanilla to one loaf with chocolate chips and added rum extract with craisins to the other loaf. I also doubled the bananas and towards the end of baking topped it with brown sugar and butter mix.
Comment by Sarah on 3 May 2010:
Baking soda? The recipe calls for baking powder. Did you add baking soda on accident? That might be the reason for the strange taste.
Comment by Nidhi on 6 May 2010:
its really awesome…….. i tried twice and my family just loves it and as soon as its fragrance starts coming u feel urself in Heaven!!!
Comment by Army Mommy & Wife on 13 May 2010:
I added Vanilla, a hint of cinnamon, and 1/2 cup of raisins and used 3 large well rippened bananas. I liked the bowl (i know i shouldn’t) I love it!
Comment by Bebe on 4 June 2010:
While they are still warm, brush/drizzle each loaf with melted butter and cinnamon-sugar. It helps to make it more flavorful. I also add cinnamon and pure(only)vanilla extract, and at least 3 medium bananas, to the batter. My fav is St. John’s banana bread from my mom’s ancient Good Housekeeping (?) cookbook, and this is similar. It is great to read everybody’s input - thank you!
Comment by Christine on 29 June 2010:
My modified version:
- add 1/2 a tsp of vanilla,
- substituted half of the butter w/ vegetable oil
- used VERY ripe bananas
- substituted the milk with 6Tablespoons of vanilla yogurt
- added some chocolate chips
Turned out EXTREMELY flavorful & moist! Perfect after school snack/ after dinner dessert!
Comment by Miriam on 6 July 2010:
I cut the sugar to 2/3 cup, and it was delicious! My husband said it was the best I have made, and I have tried at least 6 recipes!
Comment by Denise on 13 July 2010:
What a great recipe! I put in 6 ripe bananas, 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and substituted coconut milk for the regular milk - it is rich, fluffy, and totally delicious!! And, oh, we made them into muffins instead of bread - halved the cooking time. Yum!
Comment by Peter on 26 July 2010:
This is the best banana bread recipe I have ever tasted here in Switzerland
. I added some chocolate chips (1/2 cup) to the recipe and it was better than heaven!
